When you first walk into this bright, some what hipster, and trendy forward bar, dining area, and openish kitchen. That’s attached to the TownePlace Suites in Downtown Lawrence, Ks. You are welcomed and seated promptly, after being seated in a modish style chair (the longer you sit the harder the wooden seat becomes). You are greeted by your server for the evening with a menu uniquely presented on a clipboard, water in a wine styled bottle (may be a recycled wine bottle idk), and a glass with ice. The wait staff were attentive made sure everything was alright and that I didn’t have any problems or run out of water. Wasn’t a huge fan of the many televisions playing sports and news. The televisions in general don’t  seem to go with the theme.

The dinner menu has three sections “Small Plates”, “Large Plates”, and “Family Style”. Small Plates range $4-$10 while the Large Plates are $13-$18. The Family Style is to serve a family of 3 to 4, priced at $55.  -Menu at bottom of page-

I ordered from the Large Plates section and got the Smoked Chicken and Dumplings ($14) – Fried Chicken Skin Dumplings, Smoked Chicken, Hearty Broth with a dollop of cream.

 

unnamedThe Dumplings were a unique concept made with fried chicken skin. They’re crispy yet soft with a moist center, great for soaking up the bold and hearty broth. The vegetables were cooked to perfection not too soft or under cooked. The chicken was pleasantly prepared, but lacked the smoked flavor. The further into my dish the saltier it got.

 

Overall I was pleased with my visit/experience. I will be coming back to try their Breakfast, Brunch, and Happy Hour. Will also be coming back for dinner and trying other menu options.

Bierocks – Good Family Farms Ground Pork, House Sauerkraut, Oatmeal Stout Mustard, Alma Sharp Cheddar.

Smoked Wings – Applewood Smoked, Chili Glaze, Buttermilk Dressing, Pickled Celery.

Sunflower and Pistachio Hummus – House Grilled Flatbread, Marinated Red Peppers and Artichoke Hearts.

Duroc Pork Chop – House Sauerkraut, Arugula Salad, House Grainy Mustard, Spaetzle

Grilled Black Angus Denver Steak – Herb Smashed Potatoes, Blistered Tomatoes and Greens, Jus

Smoked Chicken and Dumplings – Fried Chicken Skin Dumplings, Smoked Chicken, Hearty Broth.

Black Angus House Grind Burger – Alma Sharp Cheddar, Local Greens, Local Tomato, Lark Sauce, Pickles, Brioche Bun, Hand Cut Fries.

Fried Chicken – Crumm’s Heirlooms Cornmeal, Herb Smashed Yukon Potatoes,
Fresh Veggie Slaw, Smoked Gravy, Lark a Fare Hot Sauce, House Pickles.

Veggie & Mushroom Burger – Roasted Red Pepper, Crimini Mushroom and Black Bean, with Zucchini Slaw, Local Greens, and Arugula Pesto, served with Hand Cut Fries.

Idaho Trout – Grilled Zucchini and Tomato, Local Grits, Lemon and Herb Butter, Greens.

Mac and Cheese – Alma Cheddar, Gruyere, Goddard Goat Cheese, Topped with        Basil/Arugula Pesto, House Bacon.

Ratatouille – Peak Harvest Vegetables, Black Garlic Vinaigrette, Basil, Crispy Roast Corn Polenta Cake.
